Description
Whilst on photographic safari in Botswana, we had spent the day observing a female lion moving her cubs along with tracking a pack of wild dog. We were returning to camp going through a dried up river bed, only to see this big old lion watching us from above.
We stopped to watch him and of course the cameras came back out the bags. There was something about this big old lion. His mane was incredible suggesting he was an older male and of course his nose gave it away as well. Did you know a lions nose starts out pink and gets blacker as it ages!
This lion, perhaps because of age, or perhaps because of one too many turf wars, struck me as having a very weary and tired look about him. This is what appealed to me when deciding to draw him and create a new artwork from the many photos I took of him.
