I sat on the banks of the Zambezi watching as this large bull elephant played in the shallows and mud, delighting itself with the refreshing water and mud bath after a long hot dusty day. After quenching his thirst and cooling down his skin, he slowly ambled towards me and the trees behind me.
This large elephant looked truly amazing when stepping out of the shallows, his skin appearing to be multiple shades because of the mud and water. He was truly majestic but also in my mind appeared to be “playful”, not something I would normally attribute to an adult male elephant.
The Zambezi happens to be one of my favourite spots for gathering reference material. Whether I’m photographing or simply watching and observing, it is a special place to be. The river banks team with wildlife and birdlife and not just at dawn and dusk.
Drawing this bull elephant takes me back to those magical moments and I hope others can feel this when they look at this piece.
