Driving in to the game reserve one day there were three young male lions fast asleep underneath the wooden hut that signalled the entrance to the park. Apparently brothers and great to be able to get close to them and gather good photos whilst they were resting in the shade. During the heat of the day all the animals are taking whatever shade they can get.
At the end of the day as we were leaving, we went back to look for these young lions, hoping to see some movement as dusk fell but what we found instead were some older male lions languishing in the shade which quickly turned into shadows falling upon them as the light was whisked away. One of them was particularly appealing to me and fortunately, I was still able to capture some good pictures with the help of a lower shutter speed, flash and tripod. This threw the lions mane into stark contrasts which was fascinating to see and provided inspiration for this work.
Shadow King is the 8th piece of work in my monochrome collection.
