There is a sanctuary in the UK called the Big Cat Sanctuary. I’ve spent time there photographing their wild cats which includes this somewhat famous Sumatran Tiger called Nias who lived most of his life at the sanctuary before passing away in 2021, as part of their breeding program for species that are vulnerable to the risk of extinction.

I was fortunate enough to spend many hours photographing and sketching the Big Cats and on this particular occasion, Nias was watching one of the staff members intently, probably waiting for some food. If it weren’t for his posture I’d say he was almost stalking…his watchful gaze on the food source!

Drawing Nias in full was something I had wanted to do for a very long time but never seemed to get around to.  Looking through old photos the one day, I was inspired to create this portrait, so typical of the many photos taken on one day, to include in my monochrome collection.
