During a photographic safari in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe, I had the pleasure of spending several days walking with and photographing the Mana elephants. During one of our walks, we were surrounded by young and old bull elephants who came walking towards us and the Acacia tree we were sitting under – all coming to eat the pods from the trees. This is a valuable food source and one which arrives at a point in the year when food is more scarce until the rains arrive.
The closer the elephants got the more scary the experience became, especially at the point where I could reach out and touch their trunks. Somehow, being behind the camera and looking at the small group of bull elephants through the viewfinder felt so much safer, even when they towered above us.
This portrait view tries to capture how one of the elephant appeared out of almost nowhere to then quickly be in my full view, filling the viewfinder on my camera. The original artwork is now with a private collector and given the number of elephant lovers and admirers, a series of 150 Limited Edition prints have been created. All come with a signed Certificate of Authenticity and display the print number, title and signature.
